Train the Trainer: Conducting Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution with At-risk Populations: Training Clinicians and front-line Service Providers

This training prepares individuals to train those who will discuss overdose education and naloxone use with individuals at risk of experiencing or witnessing an opioid overdose. After completion of this course, participants will be given resources to present all materials to others. This course is most appropriate for individuals who will offer trainings to county and municipal health departments, treatment providers, socials service agencies (including homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, food banks, etc), medical providers, and other community organizations and agencies that may work with at-risk individuals.

Core Material (2 Hours):

  • Opioid Overdose Background: Learn about opioid overdose causes and trends
  • Opioid Epidemic: Learn about existing efforts to combat the opioid crisis and legislative protections for naloxone use and dispensing
  • Opioid Overdose Prevention, Recognition, and Response: Learn how to correctly identify and respond to an overdose event, including how to administer naloxone, and how to prevent future overdoses
  • Delivering Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND): Learn how to provide clients with overdose education, and either distribute or recommend how and where a client can acquire naloxone.
  • MO-HOPE Evaluation: Learn how to participate in MO-HOPE evaluation protocols, including teaching clients/patients how to complete “Overdose Field Reports” when naloxone is used to reverse an overdose

Train the Trainer: Emergent Naloxone Use in the Field: Training First Responders

This POST accredited training prepares individuals to offer trainings to those who are likely to be the first responds on the scene of an overdose. After completion of this course, participants will be given resources to present all materials, and request POST accreditation for the course they offer. This course is most appropriate for individuals who will offer trainings to emergency responders, including law enforcement and fire fighters, security officers, college/university housing or residence life staff, or other individuals who may respond to an overdose emergency.

Core Material (2 Hours):

  • Opioid Use Disorder Overview: Learn about opioid use disorder, including a brief overview the effects of opioids on the brain.
  • Opioid Overdose Background: Learn about opioid overdose causes and trends
  • Opioid Epidemic: Learn about existing efforts to combat the opioid crisis and legislative protections for naloxone use and dispensing
  • Opioid Overdose Recognition and Response: Learn how to correctly identify and respond to an overdose event, including how to properly administer naloxone
  • Managing Overdose Situations: Learn how to effectively and compassionately work with individuals who have just experienced or witnessed an overdose
  • MO-HOPE Evaluation: Learn how to participate in MO-HOPE evaluation protocols, including the completion of “Overdose Field Reports” when naloxone is used to reverse an overdose

Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND) Training for Substance Use Treatment Providers

This training is designed for individuals who will discuss overdose education and naloxone use with individuals at risk of experiencing or witnessing an opioid overdose. This course is most appropriate for medical, mental health, and substance use treatment providers, social service agencies (including homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, food banks, etc.) and other community organizations and agencies that may work with individuals at risk of witnessing or experiencing an opioid overdose.

Core Material (1.5 Hours):

  • Opioid Overdose Background: Learn about opioid overdose causes and trends
  • Opioid Epidemic: Learn about existing efforts to combat the opioid crisis and legislative protections for naloxone use and dispensing
  • Opioid Overdose Prevention, Recognition, and Response: Learn how to correctly identify and respond to an overdose event, including how to administer naloxone, and how to prevent future overdoses

What we offer

The primary goal of the MO-HOPE Project is to create system level changes that will result in fewer opioid overdose deaths. A key component of that effort is to offer those who are at highest risk of experiencing or encountering an opioid overdose with the tools and knowledge to act.

MO-HOPE currently offers overdose education and response trainings for emergency responders and substance use treatment providers. Over the coming months, trainings will expand to other professional groups and the general public. A brief description of the emergency responder and substance use treatment provider trainings are provided below:

Overdose Response and Naloxone Training Program for Emergency Responders:

*A supply of naloxone (AdaptPharma Narcan nasal spray) will be given to participating agencies for use in the field.

  • OEND programming: Learn about the empirical basis for OEND programming and how to conduct OEND with your clients/patients at risk of experiencing or witnessing an overdose

*A supply of naloxone (AdaptPharma Narcan nasal spray) will be available for participating agencies and organizations if eligible.
